Guidelines for preparing articles for submission to Pravaha

Pravaha automatically converts properly structured submissions into a wiki-style format. A well-structured article helps ensure smooth review, publication, discoverability and integration within the repository.

01

Article format

Upload the primary article as a Microsoft Word .docx file.

Do not upload a PDF as the primary article document because it cannot be converted smoothly to Wiki format.

02

Use proper heading styles

Use Word's built-in heading styles instead of manually changing the font size, weight or appearance.

  • Heading 1Main section
  • Heading 2Sub-section
  • Heading 3Sub-sub-section

Example: Heading 1: Indian Astronomy; Heading 2: Major Contributions; Heading 3: Aryabhata.

03

Write clean paragraphs

  • Use simple paragraphs with default spacing.
  • Keep formatting consistent throughout.
  • Avoid multiple blank lines and extra spaces between words.
  • Do not use tabs for alignment or decorative formatting.
04

Create collapsible sections

To make a section collapsible after conversion to MediaWiki, apply Heading 1 and prefix its text with the exact string [COLLAPSE].

Example: [COLLAPSE] Historical Background

  • Everything until the next Heading 1 belongs to that collapsible block.
  • Heading 2, Heading 3, paragraphs, lists, tables and images inside the block collapse together.
05

Use real lists

Use Word's bullet and numbered-list tools whenever possible.

Do not create lists manually with spaces, symbols or typed numbers.

06

Keep tables simple

  • Clearly label rows and columns.
  • Keep every table readable.
  • Avoid merged cells and unnecessarily complex structures.
07

Images and illustrations

Upload a cover image, audio file or video through the Upload Submission section so it can appear prominently at the top-right of the Wiki article. Insert other images, figures, tables and multimedia at the intended location in the Word document using Word's Insert command.

  • Use images created by you, public-domain images, or appropriately licensed images.
  • Obtain permission before using copyrighted images.
  • Provide a caption, source and credit for every image.

Citing a source does not by itself give permission to use a copyrighted image.

08

References and sources

Support factual information with reliable sources and cite them consistently.

  • Books and recognised academic journals
  • Institutional reports and primary texts
  • Reputable websites and digital archives

Avoid unsourced claims, promotional material and unverified websites.

09

Originality and attribution

Submissions must represent the author's original work.

  • Cite sources and acknowledge translations.
  • Credit third-party images, tables and content.
  • Obtain permission for copyrighted material.

Avoid copying or closely paraphrasing text without attribution. Submissions may be screened for plagiarism, and Bharatiya Jnana Sarita may decline work containing plagiarised or improperly attributed material.

Connecting knowledge

Help readers explore related ideas

Where relevant, mention important concepts, texts, authors, places, traditions and historical figures that may be explored through related articles in the repository.
